Depending on denominational, diocesan, and parish practices, a deacon may be called to perform certain functions related to the liturgy. Typically, these functions include those listed below.
At the Holy Eucharist
- Read the Gospel
- Lead the Prayers of the People
- Prepare the Table and receive the gifts
- Stand to the presider’s right during the Great Thanksgiving
- Administer the chalice
- Perform the ablutions
- Give the dismissal
At Special Liturgies
- Carry the Paschal Candle in processions.
- Lead the prayers of the candidates for baptism, confirmation, and reception
- Sing (or say) the “Lumen Christi” and the “Exultet” at the Great Vigil of Easter.
At the Daily Office
- Prepare and lead occasions of Morning and Evening Prayer
At Other Times
- Preaching
- Administration of Communion from the Reserved Sacrament bas private worship to the sick, shut-in, and others unable to attend the parish Eucharist
- Administration of Communion from the Reserved Sacrament as a public service (unusual)
