Visit Johor 2026: Johor sets the stage for Muslim-friendly tourism

Jul 2025

As Southeast Asia continues to position itself as a key region for Muslim-friendly travel, Johor, Malaysia, is stepping confidently into the spotlight. At the Halal in Travel Global Summit 2025, Mr. Muhammad Nazul bin Abdul Rahim, Director of Tourism Johor, unveiled an ambitious and forward-thinking campaign: Visit Johor 2026. The initiative is not just about increasing tourist arrivals, but about reimagining travel through inclusivity, technology, culture, and sustainability. Johor may already be known for its proximity to Singapore, its rich culinary diversity, and its deep-rooted heritage. But as Mr. Rahim's presentation made clear, the state is ready to transform itself into ASEAN’s premier Muslim-friendly destination by 2026.

What’s a destination without a vision?

From the opening of his presentation, Mr. Rahim underscored the scale and intent behind Visit Johor 2026. Framed as both an opportunity and a commitment, the campaign reflects Johor’s strategic ambition to offer more than just sightseeing. The goal is to deliver experiences rooted in Islamic values, supported by modern infrastructure, and elevated by cultural authenticity.

According to Mr. Rahim, innovation and sustainability will serve as the guiding pillars of Johor’s tourism development. The state is embracing these principles not just as trends, but as foundational to long-term success in the travel sector.

For the future

To prepare for 2026, Johor is undergoing substantial infrastructure improvements across its key tourist destinations. These enhancements aim to make travel more intuitive and enjoyable for both domestic and international visitors.

Tourist hotspots are being upgraded, signage systems are being redesigned for clarity and accessibility, and public transport connectivity is being improved. Over the past two years, more than 100 million ringgit has been invested in tourism infrastructure alone, signaling the state government’s serious commitment to creating a visitor-friendly environment.

But it's not just about physical upgrades. Technology is playing a key role in Johor’s tourism strategy. Digital platforms will support real-time information sharing, e-ticketing for major attractions, and the ability to generate customized itineraries based on individual traveler preferences. This seamless integration of tech into the visitor experience is aimed at meeting the expectations of a new generation of digitally-savvy tourists.

A calendar full of experiences

Central to Visit Johor 2026 is the idea of offering more than just places to visit—it's about curating a full year of engaging, family-friendly experiences. A robust calendar of events is being planned, spanning multiple themes such as cultural festivals, heritage showcases, sports, nature-based activities, and gastronomic events.

These events are designed not only to attract visitors but to ensure that their time in Johor is filled with rich, varied, and immersive moments. Whether travelers come to explore local cuisine, participate in heritage celebrations, or enjoy outdoor adventures, Johor aims to deliver meaningful experiences that resonate.

Community at the heart of development

Mr. Rahim’s presentation emphasized that tourism growth cannot exist in a vacuum. The success of Visit Johor 2026 depends on collaboration—across sectors, stakeholders, and communities.

The state is actively engaging with federal agencies such as the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and Tourism Malaysia to amplify service quality and strengthen international promotions. Equally important is the inclusion of local industry players, entrepreneurs, and community members, whose participation ensures that tourism benefits are equitably distributed.

This grassroots approach reflects Johor’s desire to grow tourism responsibly. It's not just about increasing footfall, but about uplifting local economies, preserving cultural traditions, and ensuring that growth is sustainable and inclusive.

Leading the way in sustainable tourism

Sustainability is not being treated as a peripheral concern- it is central to the Visit Johor 2026 framework. Johor is positioning itself as a benchmark for responsible tourism in the region.

This involves a multi-pronged approach. Certification programs such as the Malaysian Tourism Quality Assurance (MyTQA) are being used to accredit accommodations and attractions that meet sustainability standards. In tandem, training programs are being rolled out to help tourism stakeholders adopt greener and more ethical practices.

Heritage preservation also plays a crucial role. Iconic sites such as the 128-year-old Museum Tokco and the Sultan Ibrahim Building are being protected and promoted. Meanwhile, traditional cultural expressions are being revitalized and presented to international audiences.

Through these efforts, Johor is ensuring that its development remains respectful of its past while being firmly focused on the future.

A clear focus on key markets

Tourism Johor’s outreach strategy is carefully aligned with the state’s geographical strengths and cultural ties. The campaign targets a mix of short-haul and long-haul markets, including Singapore, Indonesia, other ASEAN nations, China, the broader Asia-Pacific region, and the Middle East.

These regions represent both cultural affinity and high potential for travel growth. By aligning its marketing with these specific markets, Johor is maximizing its visibility among Muslim travelers who seek destinations that understand and cater to their values.

Social media campaigns, influencer collaborations, and partnerships with travel bloggers will be at the core of this outreach, aiming to build excitement and trust among targeted audiences.

A bold, but believable, target

With all these plans in motion, Johor has set an ambitious goal: “Next year, we are targeting to welcome 12 million tourists to Johor,” Mr Rahim declared. “It’s an ambitious number [...] but with all the exciting events, upgraded facilities, and the warm hospitality of Johor is known for, we believe it is absolutely achievable.”

Given the state’s ongoing investments, strategic partnerships, and experience in managing both domestic and cross-border tourism, particularly from neighboring Singapore, this target is not just aspirational. It is grounded in the very real momentum that Johor has been building.

The initiative is about more than visitor statistics. It’s about making Johor a place where tourism contributes meaningfully to quality of life, economic resilience, and global cultural exchange.

What’s ahead in 2026

As destinations around the world compete for the attention of Muslim travelers, Johor is placing itself firmly in the running. Visit Johor 2026 encapsulates a vision that merges tradition with innovation, and heritage with forward-looking infrastructure. It’s a campaign rooted in substance, designed not just to attract, but to resonate.
